now that’s a head of hair

I always run through the yarn aisle whenever I go to the craft store to see if anything inspires me to make a doll. I loved this super bulky, subtley variegated brown.  Shoot! I tossed the wrapper but I think it’s Lion Brand Thick & Quick in Sequoia. I made up a doll with the Kit, Chloe and Louise pattern and gave her a serious head of hair with this yarn. It turned out really great. Phoebe has already given the doll a few hairstyles, the first pic above is the one she left her in this morning. I always want to do a fancy braided swirly bun updo kind of thing with dolls but really the kids playing with them love to have that hair loose and flowing so they can make their awesomeness. I did her hair last night so I have no in-progress photos but I stuck some pins in her hair to show the “seam” lines where I sewed the hair down in case anyone is interested.

I know I’ve talked about yarn hair a hundred times but here’s my go-to process… stuff, pin, sew. I stuff the doll, pin the hair where I want it (looping the yarn, not cutting individual strands) and then I sew it down with a matching thread. The only other shortcut is when I know I’ll be doing braids, I’ll loop the yarn around cardstock and sew the part on a sewing machine making a sort of wig which I then sew down to the head.

The front section, which would be bangs if they were cut short but which I kept long, is wonderful for styling. It goes back in a twist or a braid and can be secured with a barrette or an elastic. This is a mini revelation for me. I feel like I often cut bangs, because I love them so, but this way is a lot of fun!

I did an underlayer in the back to add fullness and coverage. I will probably go back and cover the “skin” in between the layers as well. Phoebe seems pretty into this girl so I’ll add the coverage so she can do side ponys and braids too.
