saskatoon berries

hello, old, tired, misused, neglected blog. I need to spiffy you up this summer finally. I think I say that every time I open you up. I will go ask tim right now if we're switching you over to wordpress. don't tell your typepad overlords.

we have had a super rainy late spring so far. the serviceberries are bursting off the tree so I think it's time to pick them. I've made a pie and tarts in the past with them. this year I was thinking jam. I've never made it though. I'm sure I'll only get one jar worth. then I just boil that jar in hot water? sounds easy enough

Wow – those are the reddest saskatoons I’ve ever seen! (I’m actually in Saskatoon so imagine my surprise at finding that title in my reader…) Ours are typically deep purple, almost black, but they won’t be ready for a few weeks yet. Didn’t realize you could grow them so far south, especially since they can’t grow them too far east or west of here, but the hangs in soil probably accounts for the red colour. We throw them in apple crisp and rhubarb pie when we get’em, and they go great with cheesecake! Enjoy!
