kids clothes week challenge: day one: tulip turtleneck

kids clothes week challenge

pattern: from this book.

fabric: jersey knit fabric from here

sewing time: about an hour ( I’d already traced the pattern pieces and prewashed the fabric)

overall: success! there may have been a loud snapping sound of a thread breaking when I pulled it over her head but I went back and sewed it up while stretching the fabric and I think we’re going to be okay.

hat: yes, another one. she wanted pink. it’s done in this yarn. I don’t know if I’m feeling it as much as in the thick/thin yarn as the book recommended. I think I need to hit the local yarn shop.

a little flashback Phoebe sewing. I can’t believe her hair was so dark!

  1. I just came across your lovely site and am enjoying it. You make crafting seem like so much fun and not intimidating. As a beginner in the world of crafting, I’ll definitely stop by more often.

  2. Hilary, did you use a serger for your knits? I’m starting a dress/pant combo from Oliver+S patterns and it’s my first time sewing with knits. I’ve been studying “Sew U: Home Stretch” but still don’t know until I go for it whether I’ll want to invest in a serger or if my Janome 6600’s Knit Stitch will work. What has worked best for you with knits?
    Thanks!

  3. I meant to say in my last post that your Phoebe’s turtleneck is adorable and you’ve inspired me to actually use my japanese pattern book!

  4. Totally cute! And I think the hat looks sweet in that yarn, truly. Love the bookbag, too. 🙂

  5. Cute shirt! What sewing machine stitch did you use? I sometimes have trouble with my stitches breaking when I sew knits.

  6. Great top! Love the fabric. And your daughter is totally cute.
I just visited Purl Soho in NYC and bought your book there after admiring it on their blog. I traced two patterns last night and am so thrilled to get started. I had one of those reversible two sided dollies as a little girl that I loved so much. I was pretty excited to see that pattern. Even more excited at how straightforward the directions appear. Thanks, cheers, and congratulations on the book!

  7. It turned out really really cute and looks like you did a fantastic job sewing. Nice!

  8. Oh good! Hope it goes smoothly. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. And I’d love to hear/see how it goes!

  9. hi jennifer, yes, I did use a serger. but it’s an older hand-me-down and I think I have it threaded wrong. It does the trick but I bet that stitch on your machine would work too. I did get a ball needle for my machine finally and that works well on knits.

  10. just my regular stitch and a ball needle. are you supposed to use a different stitch? I need to buy that built by wendy knits book!

  11. I love the hat! Ooh, and the Totoro bag. They’re both amazing.
