want to settle a little bet?

** update: alright! enough! I’m wrong. stop rubbing it in. and wow. I didn’t realize there were that many October blog babies. My theory was backtack 2. That was so huge and I thought maybe everyone started their blog so they could post their stuff. Tim’s at work doing his happy dance. It is all one big damn coincidence after all. **

ok, I was noticing last night that a lot of the newer crafty blogs all started in October. or around there, September, November. what’s up? Tim and I were debating this. He thinks there is no reason just the boom in blog popularity. I think it’s got to be more than a coincidence and I have a theory. If you’re out there and have a crafty blog started around this time can you leave a comment as to why you started blogging when you did? and if you know of someone who did can you please send them over?

I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’m right and can do my ha ha happy dance all over Tim when he gets home. I’m hoping this turns the tide around here. I’ve been way more wrong than right these days. Who knew there were two fancy fondue restaurants in Chicago. geesh.

started in january but had been thinking about it for quite some time ( i know a lot of januari startes too must be a resolution thing!) Anyway I think backtack 2 was a trigger for me..

  2. Anna says:

I honestly don’t know why I started blogging in October. Maybe it’s because the long days of Summer were done and I started spending more time inside and infront if the computer.
I’m curious to see what others say.

  3. Blair says:

I started my blog around then, and I noticed too that a lot of blogs started around then. Why I started then was mainly because my kids went back to school and I had time (I’d wanted to long before). If you tell me your theory and its different from this, I’ll come back and deny this comment and write a new one : )

  4. Jenn (knittyJenn) says:

as for me…my blog says I was on since September…which is true. but it didn’t start out a crafting blog. it just started out as a regular blog (even though I’ve had a livejournal since about 2002. lol)…cause I saw other blogspot blogs and I really liked how they looked.
well that lasted all of 2 seconds before i started wondering why in the world do I have 2 journals with all the same info. so I deleted the entries but left the space open just in case I wanted to use it later.
my knitting obsession began in december, b/c of a christmas gift my boyfriend gave me and I’ve been a crafter since I can remember! researching knitting online, I came upon soooo many blogs (and many on blogger) that I decided it would be lots of fun to start my own and voila…my knitting blog began in early February of this year! ๐Ÿ™‚
    k…ridiculously long explanation. the end!

  5. gigi says:

I actually moved mine over to typepad from another weblog provider in October. But I think that I started the “crafting” section (which actually took over) because I was making x-mas gifts. And I bet that was your theory! Am I right??? Do I win a prize??? Just kidding…

  6. Kelli says:

I started my blog in November 2004. In part it was because I discovered blogs just a month prior. The other part was a chance to get and share ideas for the upcoming holiday rush. I love getting ideas for homemade crafts and then sharing the results with others.

  7. Toni says:

I actually started blogging in August, and switched over to typepad in October. Close enough, eh? I began when I came across Cassi’s blog, Bella Dia. That was the first crafty blog I had ever laid eyes on and I was swept off my feet! I knew then and there I had to join this wonderful world of women who were passionate about creating like I was!
Did that get you any closer to the ha ha happy dance?? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. misplacedpom says:

Hello! I started my craft blog in October ’05. I have another personal blog, but I’d started interjecting my random thoughts with pictures of the sock monkeys I make for a charity here in NYC. I started making them in August but wanted a bit more inspiration and when I was googling for more ideas, I came across loobylu’s month of softies and from there my blogroll exploded! I got so inspired by all the other people’s softies and knitting that I just had to start making things myself. Once the sockmonkeys and knitting became more dominant on the personal blog, I decided to move them over to a home of their own. It took me til December to make the move.

  9. Cathy says:

I actually had a blog that I started three years ago and my blog provider pulled the plug with no forewarning and I lost everything. This actually happened twice. I then went to blogger so I knew I had a stable company and found after using it for a while that I couldn’t do a lot of things I wanted to I moved over to Typepad.
The timing of the move (November) was due to the lack of summer activity and the start of colder weather so more time indoors, more time in my craft studio and computer.
    Hope this helps, interesting observation.

  10. Dawn Christ says:

Had an LJ for two years moved to Blogger for about a year and just moved to Typepad in Jan. Maybe people have been here and you just noticed them more?
I started a blog to write about my pregnancy and it just morphed from there.

  11. hillary says:

dawn – no, I’m not talking about when I noticed them but rather looking at their archives and seeing October 2005 over and over again as the start.

  12. Alicia says:

First post Sept. 30, day I met Amy K. in real life. Had a CRAP summer and was extremely stressed out, and decided to do something that was just for no good reason at all before I freaked out all over the place. Now I just point my head at the computer when it’s about to explode. Actually it doesn’t feel like it’s about to explode much anymore. Yay.
Miss you Hills. I’ll write later.

  13. betty says:

I started mine 7th october, because I was pregnant, and Loobylu had just had Amelia J. I read ALL the entries of her blog, and loved it. I had been reading Not Martha for quite a bit too, and wanted to write something similar.

  14. Adriana says:

I’m not sure if this will help, but just in case, I started planning mine around that time – October 05 – being the OC type, I gathered info and started designing. I wanted to go live on Jan 1st so I fine tuned until then.
I’ve not got anything against Tim, but it’s nice to do the happy dance in front of husbands every now and then ๐Ÿ™‚
    Hope this helps!

  15. melissa says:

I wanted to fit it. No… not really, but kind of. And my friends wanted to see pictures of my kid, and I needed the motivation to finish so many of the projects I had begun. I needed a distraction! (I know… awe-inspiring)

  16. laura says:

I didn’t start mine in Sept/Oct. I was too busy with my newborn:). I started mine in January after weeks of obsessively checking all the wonderful crafting blogs. Maybe I needed an escape from diapers, spit-up, and other baby things. I think the new year thing made me want to start one. Also, I was so inspired by everyone else’s, I thought it would be a good way to organize everything that I’d been working on. Actually, i ended up completely starting over in early march, so if you look at my blog, it starts in march.

  17. Ashley says:

I started my blog this past November, and when I stop to think about it the reason I chose that month is twofold. First, I really started looking at craft and design blogs over the summer and it took that many months to build up the nerve to start my own. And second, fall (and spring) is just so inspiring. The change in weather, the upcoming holidays, that back to school feeling that never goes away. There’s just something in the air that urges me to make changes and be creative.

  18. Pink Rocket says:

I started my blog back in October of last year; my husband had just left for to work in a foreign country so I was keeping myself busy by making ALL of my Christmas presents. I was looking for a quick tutorial on how to felt when I stumbled into the world of blogging (surprisingly I had never heard of a blog and I’m 25!) only to find SouleMama and MOMster in Paris. Then I was hooked! I figured that I too could share some of my Christmas craftiness!
    Good luck on you bet!

  19. tammie says:

started in october because i thought i was going to get a lot of crafting done for the holidays. started reading blogs at the end of the summer because my babe would only sleep on me, and i didn’t want to park myself in front of the tv.
finally got up my nerve to do my own blog in october.
am moving over to typepad in the next few days – i love it already! (http://headfullofpixies.typepad.com)

  20. KiWi says:

I started in October because the shop I was to begin consigning with was opening November 1st so I wanted to have a place to discuss and display.
Of course, I was a miserable failure at that shop and now I have an Etsy site that been 100% more successful.

  21. stephanie says:

i started at blogspot on Oct. 18. it started because my infertility emotions had rendured me so fagile that the only way to communicate what i was going through was via blog posts. then it turned into an adoption blog. and finally i ended up at typepad with my current blog that really encompasses all of the real me. The sum of all things me!
i can’t wait to hear your theory.

  22. dawn says:

I started mine in October or November of 2004. Mine was because MSN started spaces and being a Microsoft spouse I felt some loyalty to their product. But it was also the time of year… pitting in to craft for the winter.

  23. Christine says:

I started my blog in October, but that was because there was a transition between design phases at work where I had a lot of time on my hands to search the internet for knitting patterns. I was then promptly sucked into Blogland.

  24. ivy says:

I started in august, but it was mostly because my other had started a blog recently. I’d been thinking about it for a while and figured I’d jump in.
My guess would be that October is really the start of the heavy crafting season and people just feel inspired at that time of year.

  25. Melanie (aka dotdotbaby) says:

I had a baby in October. Quit my job in November (after maternity leave) and FINALLY had time to do all the crafty things I had in my head. I discovered crafty blogs sometime in December I think. I started mine shortly thereafter. Maybe it has something to do with the baby boom and a sort of return to domestication?

  26. Dacia says:

My reason is a little off-the-wall, so it probably won’t help you with your bet. A porn advocate/actor decided to use my name as her pseudonym for various reasons and created a site, daciaray.com. She also happened to live in NYC and was my age. Writers that I managed started getting confused and making inappropriate comments after finding this site on Google. I brought up this issue with her and she agreed to let me buy the domain from me and kindly altered her pseudonym slightly. October happened to be the month my husband had time to work on the site, c’est la vie. I’ve always been crafty, so this was a natural extension of that for me. I am so thankful for this crafting community. I can’t tell you how many days have been made by craft blogs! I’m curious to know what your theory is though. I had noticed the same thing.

  27. chelle says:

I started my blog in November 2005. I found blogs when google started referencing them; I think I googled munki munki fabric to discover the whole new world of craft blogs. I felt that this was something I needed to do, so spent October preparing the blog, and finally launched in November.

  28. Shannon says:

I guess I qualify, since I started in October. Mine was started as a knitting blog, though I talk more about everything else, besides knitting! I only learned to Knit in August of last year and a friend of mine kept sending me blogs to look at and they were so fun to read! I just decided to start one myself on a whim after reading so many of them…it seemed like a fun thing to do too!

  29. 3 to get ready says:

Qualifying mine as a ‘crafty’ blog is maybe wishful thinking, but it’s definitely ‘newer.’ I started blogging Labor Day Weekend ’05 after reading several established crafty blogs (yours was a staple!) for 4-5 months. Finally I couldn’t stand it any longer. I had to get crafting! And I had to post about it!
Here’s the money answer — the kids went back to school so I had a little more time. More of a set schedule, more time to craft, etc.
    Is that what you thought?

  30. Rurality says:

I have to agree with your husband on this one (sorry). I’ve got a farm/nature blog and it seems like a lot of that type started up around that time too.
By the way your stripey ruffle fabric below is just like the sheets I had on my bed in the 70s! Except the stripe was pink instead of green.

  31. karin says:

since I’ve just spend 30 mins trying to figure out when and why I started I’m just going to comment anyway.
I started end sept ’04. REason? Not sure. I started to knit, was looking for cool knitting projects and linked from one amazing weblog to another. A whole big world of creativity opened up, like a huge unread magazine of color, photos, ideas and projects. my man had been blogging about ironman and weightloss and I guess it’s contagious. I think not living near my family is another reason, they can read and see photos. Somehow I think it was also a link to interesting creative people I hadn’t yet met in this town.
And I guess in summer I’m always outside and end of september winter starts so yes, more computer/crafting time.
I love theories, even ones that turn out to be untrue ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Tim says:

Well I was worried after that first comment but now I am doing my happy dance. First fondue and now this– it’s a banner month!

  33. Claire says:

Hey! I’m too late for you to exactly win your bet but back-tack was my #1 reason for wanting to start a blog. I was so envious of those gorgeous packages and wanted to be part of it. I started up in November last year. Of course now I’m addicted but it did work, even though I’m not part of back-tack I’ve still done some great swaps. Have a look at my post today – it’s all about vintage aprons ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Camille says:

I started my blog in October because of Backtack. I wanted to take part in all the crafty fun and still haven’t figured out how to get in on Backtack for some reason. Then I noticed Tie One On and Month of Softies and am addicted to craft blogs now. YAY! another reason to be tied to my computer! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  35. Kristin says:

Since October!!? Why am I always so far behind? I just started mine this week. I realize your question was not directed at March bloggers, but still feel a need to reply. This cyber world is still so new to me. It’s not like I’ve been living in a cave, I had heard of blogs before…but this whole crafty blogger world thing going on right under my nose? Why was I the last to know? It was actually you, Hillary, who got me hooked-earlier this year I googled “felted” and was connected right to your little purple felted bear-I have not been quite the same since. I got sucked right in and can’t stop…I just love all the crafty goodness floating about out there. For me this would have never happened if I hadn’t made the switch to cable…with dial-up I only had the patience to do email.
I’m grateful to have found you and all the links to this amazing world. Thanks for all the wonderful inspiration on your blog!!

  36. lyn says:

You are a bigger person than me.
I would have deleted this post, and the comments, rather than admit my husband was right about anything. ; )

  37. Annette says:

Wierd, do you see a difference between the 6 month old crafty blogs and the 12 month old crafty blogs? Which ones are the blog babies?

  38. sally says:

I started my blog [for the 2nd time] in September, who knew there was a crafting blog boom that month! I didn’t discover backtack 2 until a few months later though.

  39. andy says:

started in january but was in the planning stages during the fall months – i think it has something to do with starting new projects in the fall (like back to school)and having long winter night to stay in and do crafts.

  40. Alison says:

See Hillary if you’d asked us first, we could have saved your husband doing a dance….!!!
We only had a handfull of people delibarately start blogs just for BT2. Everyone else already had well established blogs. Perhaps there were others who wanted to be part of BT2 that didn’t have blogs, but we’d made it clear a blog was a prerequisite for joining. I’ll be interested to see if new people start blogging for the third installment which we’re about to launch…I’ll let you know!

  41. justine says:

I started in November 2005. Your blog, Angry Chicken and Loobylu were my regular reads for a couple of months beforehand. Mine is meant to be a craft blog, but I spend to much time looking and not enough doing. I started it to have an outlet for my creativity in whatever form it chooses to come out. Thanks for your great site and the free patterns and the ace paper dolls : )

  42. Hayley says:

Actually for the record, my blog came around as a result of backtackII. I wasn’t a participant, but I saw all the lovely things people had made and though, hey, I can DO that, and so I started my blog ๐Ÿ™‚ In late October-early November.

  43. carly says:

this is a really interesting thought … I have wondered myself…. I started mine in october 2004 because I was looking for info on business women (I had been home with lily almost a year and was selling my toys to shops so was interested in working for myself) and found another.girlatplay.com probably in july 2004:: there I found kerry smith and claire… then you through claire and I lurked for a few months then plucked up the courage to have my own blog… I officially started one year ago today!

  44. esther says:

Hai, I started my log in november. Before that I was for a month completley gobsmakked with the beautiful things I saw. And the reasen I started was to see if it could help me be more creative. And that time of the year! Cosy in the house, making things pretty and baking…

  45. Cheyenne says:

I’ve had an onsite blog since then, but I moved from livejournal so I don’t think I count! I’ve had an online journal of some sorts since 2000 I don’t know what I found so appealing about blogging though!

  46. tanya says:

I started mine in November, for several reasons: I wanted an outlet (audience, if you will) for my creative side, one I don’t get here b/c we have recently moved to a new city and don’t have a lot friends (at least not outside of my job, and most aren’t crafty). The second reason is all the inspiration I see on these craft blogs –especially wee wonderfuls. My blog started off as crafts and cooking, but now it is solely crafts, and I started a different one for cooking (www.vegaquarian.blogspot.com).
I don’t even know what baktrack or etsy or most of all that stuff is!

  47. E says:

i only started my blog 2 days ago, but i had been thinking about it for a few months now, since september/october. it didn’t have to do with backtack 2, only that i had been reading blogs for a while and finally found the courage to come out of lurking and slowly start commenting around that time. on wednesday, i wanted to comment on someone’s blog, but i had to be a member of blogger first, so that was the extra push i needed to get me started. i love your dolls, by the way. ๐Ÿ™‚

  48. Gisela says:

I started my blog in October. I changed to a new job then and I was feeling a little bit lonely and just nedeed to share my crafts with other people. Not a very happy reason…

  49. roo-roo says:

I started my blog just a few days ago. My inspiration was THIS blog which I have been reading on and off for awhile. I also thought I might get projects done. It was also a new years resolution…

  50. Laura says:

I started my blog in Oct/Nov. after seeing all the wonderful craftiness out there, and in anticipation for my baby in late Dec. I didn’t really post until Jan. though. (Funny its nearly the same story as the commenter before me, lol)

  51. Miss Dot says:

I started in October 2005! freaky! maybe I started then because I had a job where I had a lot of free time and a fast internet connection. My previous job was insane and I barely ate lunch let alone surfed! I started by reading a blog by an ex colleague who had a link to Craftapalooza and she has the best links!!! it all went from there.
