Pleat it!

Pleatedbag6

(this is a new photo. the ones I took this morning were awful, not that this one is much better. I’m going to have to start waiting until later in the day to get better light)

Here’s the new bag I was talking about. I was so pleased with the pleating idea that I was tempted to sew up every last bit of fabric I have into pleated bags. But then yesterday I was distracted from the pleating course by another bag idea I want to try out. This one I’m even more excited about (hint: I cannot resist the siren call of wool felt), but I’m going to need some help from my artistic husband so not sure when it’ll get done.

For this bag I used a magnetic clasp that I got at Walmart on the cheap. It is super strong. Maybe too strong. The cheaper the clasp, the stronger it is? I’d better use my 3 remaining clasp wisely because it has been declared that we will “never ever go to that crapheap again!” so no more Walmart. Another bag-making item that would have helped out this bag and is essential for my next one is some better stiffer interfacing. I think I’ll order myself some Timtex and give that a try.

Another thing I’m trying to order is fabric from Japan. I think I’m out of luck though. As info at cotton-bowwow informed me

Dear sir.
I am sorry, I am selling only Japan.
Sincerely.

sadder words have never been written 🙁

Is anyone out there living in Japan and up for a fabric trade?

Hi! I live in Tokyo, but before that I went to school at Dominican in River Forest, and was a reference librarian at the Maywood Public Library. Small world. So I like reading about things around your neighborhood–I miss Oak Park. 🙁 Let me know what fabrics you are interested in and I’ll see what I can do!

Oh my god. Those cotton bow wow fabrics are my dream. I might have to find a Japanese connection myself …
Someday (hopefully soon) American retailers will pick up on the fact that there’s a big demand here for prints like these.

First I have to say how much I love reading your site and seeing all the incredibly cool things you make and find. It’s a true inspiration.
I make quite a few purses myself and magnetic snaps are a must. I’ve found a few sources where they aren’t terribly expensive ($1.75 each) in shiny brass, shiny nickle, dull brass, or shiny black and I’ll be placing another order in December or January. If you’re interested in having me add some on my order for you, I’m more than willing to do so. I’d pay to ship them to you, since they don’t weigh too much (unless you’re ordering hundreds, and then you don’t need me.
I’ve been happy with the quality I’ve been getting. Some of the cheaper ones I’ve found have been painted, or dipped, to make them pretty and this chips off over time. These don’t do that.
Email me if you’re interested and thanks so much for your inspiring site.
